@Einahpets Thanks! I’m not familiar with the series, but it looks interesting. I’m trying to power through Les Mis (to the extent that I have time to power through books these days — though I do plan on breaking when Scalzi’s Head On comes out next month), but maybe after I’m done with it I’ll check them out.

Pixel 2 vs. PowerShot SX710HS

Pixel 2 vs. PowerShot SX710HS.

I’m only a hobbyist photographer. I don’t have a really nice camera, just a point & shoot that I picked mainly for its optical zoom. And I’m still astonished that I can often get better pictures out of the tiny lens on my phone.

This is from #WonderCon over the weekend, my wife’s #cosplay as Whitney Frost from Agent Carter. The phone picture is so much sharper, and the Pixel 2 finally gets the color balance better too.

introductions time!

#introductions time! I’m an LA-area programmer, #scifi / #comics / #fantasy fan & hobbyist photographer. I’ve been @kelsonv for a while, but I keep meaning to look for a more specific instance for fandom-related discussions. It looks like this might be it?

Watching #iZombie, #TheFlash & #TheMagicians, way behind on a bunch of other shows. Favorite comics ATM are #Saga & #AstroCity.

In the middle of re-reading all of #LesMiserables, currently on the chapters introducing Marius.

It’s weird how it hides the instance name…my other accounts are on mastodon.social (my main one) and photog.social (my photography). Maybe I should’ve picked different usernames as well just for clarity?

@kemonine I’ve been thinking about this a lot, not just in terms of people abusing the network, but in terms of how much I use it, who I follow, what topics are discussed… It’s still possible for a bunch of people to act in good faith without being toxic, but end up putting you in a worse mood. You have to curate your experience. And I think segmenting across instances helps with that, but I’m still figuring out that balance.

Nighttime fountain at the Anaheim Convention Center. This was a popular spot for cosplay photos even after sunset, but I managed to catch an angle that looked deserted.

My full gallery of photos from WonderCon is up on Flickr. Most of them are just cosplay snapshots. This ended up being the only artistic shot I took that came out really well.

Realized just why I feel so detached from current Flash comics.

Realized just why I feel so detached from current #TheFlash comics.

Long series can be:
– Static: You have a handle on the status quo & follow stories within it.
– Dynamic/Illusion of Change: Things change superficially, balancing familiarity with novelty.
– Dynamic/Progression: Things change, and you can get attached to the characters’ journey.
– Dynamic/Churn: Things change so fast you can’t get your bearings.

I was a fan of 20 years of progression. A decade of churn has left me exhausted.

So apparently the sender domain name in DKIM is case-sensitive? Why?

So apparently the sender domain name in DKIM is case-sensitive?

Why?

Domain names themselves *aren’t* case-sensitive. There is no difference between Example.com and example.com. Not for IP routing, not for email routing.

What purpose does it serve for email from blah@Example.com to fail DKIM when sent under the exact circumstances & from the same computer as email from blah@example.com?

Birds of Madrona Marsh

Birds of Madrona Marsh in Torrance, California.

It’s a seasonal marsh, where the low-lying parts stay wet most of the year, but the rest dries out ever summer and floods during winter rains.

I spotted ducks, doves, geese, these black birds with bright red wings that sound like a smoke detector battery alert, this white bird that looked like it was fishing, plus dragonflies, a huge bee, and I heard (but didn’t see) frogs.

Actually the croaking frogs might have been quacking ducks in the distance, now that I think about it.

On Photog.Social

I think the white bird might be a snowy egret, and that red-winged black bird turns out to be… a red-winged blackbird. 😄

Reminder to self: No more pre-built desktops unless *every component* is upgradable.

I just spent 2 1/2 hours convincing an old Dell to see the new graphics card again after upgrading the processor. It’s mostly working now, but everything before Windows finishes booting will only go out on the old onboard video.

Rising above the clouds… I tried a lot of crops on this (otherwise it’s unmodified) but finally settled on the square because I wanted enough of both the rooftops and the sky bracketing the clouds and mountain, and I wanted to steer clear of some of the foreground buildings that would have appeared on the sides and break up the layout

Birdsite administrivia snafu

Twitter locked the two project-specific accounts I use regularly, but not the personal account I use to log into Tweetdeck. Supposedly for behavior violating the Twitter Rules(tm), but all I had to do was verify my phone number on each.

I only tried to log in b/c Tweetdeck wasn’t loading their columns. I suspect that it was Tweetdeck’s error causing the suspicious behavior to begin with.

Or Twitter just really wants a phone number on every account now.

That seems like a weird kind of thing to be a bug. It’s probably intentional on *someone’s* part.

It really makes you wonder about the security of things like Amazon Key.

Update from the article: Apparently there was an “Alexa, laugh” command that was picking up on sounds that it wasn’t supposed to.

Which brings up an entirely *different* set of concerns over internet-connected voice activation.

If Twitter and Facebook are like shouting into the void, hoping someone will hear you, Flickr is like building a gallery and hoping someone will visit. When someone finally does, they’ll see it, and look around.

But that scream on Twitter is already fading on the wind.

Especially if Twitter thinks your friends would be more interested in seeing a sponsored post instead.
