Picking up Japanese again in Duolingo after reviewing Spanish & German for a while. And my brain is jumping on mixes of the other two languages. I was just asked to translate “Where are your parents” and my first thought was “Donde estan sus Eltern?”
In reply to @FiXato about doing the same thing with German & Norwegian
Heh… at least German and Norwegian are more similar than German & Spanish. Or either and Japanese!
Something I do find interesting though is when German & Spanish share something with each other but not with English. Like Möbel & mueble vs. furniture.
In related news, it’s weird how much easier it is to add accents and other marks on a phone keyboard (even without language-appropriate autocorrect) than on a physical keyboard with the US-English layout even though it’s easier to type in general on the real keyboard.
No surprise the same people who reject climate science because they don’t like policies to deal with climate change are rejecting epidemiology because they don’t like policies to deal with a pandemic. That’s not rationality, skepticism or critical thinking. It’s willful ignorance

You know the scene in The Iron Giant where the kid has had a cup of espresso (“It’s like Coffee-zilla”) and is zooming around and talking a mile a minute and blurts out, “gotanymorecoffee?”
That’s been my morning. Only the kid hasn’t had any coffee.

COVID-19 “super-spreaders” and “super-spreading events”: The controversy
Evidence is emerging suggesting that COVID-19 does not spread equally. A minority of infected individuals seem to spread the virus easily to many people, while most infected individuals spread it to few others or no one at all, likely through a combination of circumstance, environment, and possibly biology. Why is this, and what does it mean for coronavirus containment strategies?

Broken Pedal
Kitchen trash-can has one of those pedals you step on to open the lid without touching it with your hands. Pedal broke. Ordered new pedal. Got new pedal. Discovered that I’d ordered the wrong pedal. Sent it back to exchange for the correct pedal. Made absolutely sure I ordered the correct pedal this time. FedEx claims they left the box at the front door two days ago. Box actually arrived today.
Box contained a lid.

“The bread’s not going to have gone anywhere. It’s not like it’s going to walk away. Actually that would be freaky.”
“The walking bread?”
“I fear the walking bread!”

HOW? This is running on the same computer. No hardware changes. It’s a modern Mac, I *can’t* make any hardware changes. I don’t think I’ve even *rebooted* the machine since I last ran this VM.
Wait, there was an OS update last week. Did I last run this VM early in the week or later in the week?
I have no idea, because time has no meaning anymore.
But yeah, maybe it was early in the week and the latest point release reports something slightly differently to VMWare.

Local grocery store was running so late with curbside pick-up that they had to cancel most of this evening’s orders. The system isn’t set up to just reschedule them for the next day.
Fortunately the website has an “Add all to cart” button on the cancelled order and I was able to redo it for tomorrow in less than two minutes.
