American Crow
I’ve mostly stopped taking pictures of crows to submit here, because they’re so common. But this one was just standing on top of a hedge as I walked quickly along the sidewalk. It didn’t budge. So I stopped, grabbed my phone, and took a bunch of pictures from maybe 6 feet away. I even moved to get a better angle and it didn’t fly off, just kept looking around while staying put.

Green Buttonwood
Gray Whales
This was my first digital camera, and my first real frustrating experience with the delay between pressing the button and actually capturing the image. It’s just not fast enough to capture an image of a whale breaching the surface.
I have lots of pictures of splashes.
This was the best image I got where you can actually see part of a whale!
Hawaiian Silversword
On the upper elevations on Mauna Kea…and just about nowhere else…grows the endangered Silversword . Park rangers actually planted one near the side of the road and put a fence around it so that visitors could see it without hiking through the 11,000-foot-high wilderness.
autograph tree
Scratches on the leaves persist for a long time, making it possible for people to write initials, names, etc. on them.
Ray-finned Fishes
Treasure Flowers / Gazanias
This lone flower was growing against the base of a tree in the strip of grass next to the sidewalk. It reminds me of some flowers in a planter down the street, but it’s not quite the same. They’re purple and white, and the petals are thicker than these.

House Sparrow taking wing
Somewhere between 6-12 of them wandering around the brush and open area at the top of the bluffs near the coast. A lot less nervous than the ones I’ve seen in the city. I was able to get a lot closer.
