The owner of example.com automatically owns www.example.com, whatever.example.com…

In response to concerns that someone could set up a phishing subdomain on a legit primary domain

@jessmahler @rowan @ibagail @DialMforMara @Anke They’d have to alter the registry info (either at the registrar itself or by controlling the network that the target user is on) in order to set up another subdomain and actually get it to function. If they can do that, they don’t need the subdomain – they can alter the records for the primary.

@ibagail The owner of example.com automatically owns http://www.example.com, whatever.example.com, blah.blah.blah.example.com, etc. In the case of YouTube, YouTube.com is the building and www is one floor of the building.

They can let someone else use some floors if they want to, but no one can just grab http://www.youtube.com

That said, it is possible for YouTube to set up different websites with and without www. It’s not common, and most sites choose not to in order to avoid confusion, but it does happen.

I installed Instagram on a Chromebook to see if I could.

Um, now what?

When I first used Instagram, I really wanted to be able to upload photos from my camera & type captions with a real keyboard. But it’s been built around uploading from phones since the beginning, and it just doesn’t lend itself to any other use case, even when you can get it to run on another form factor.

Plus phone photos are a lot better now, & it’s just as easy to transfer pics from the camera to the phone.

@brion In the specific case of Instagram, the website doesn’t offer full functionality: you can browse & update your bio, but you can’t add new photos.

I haven’t tried any game apps yet, partly because I just got an underpowered one to use as a second laptop. (I figure if I get nice hardware, I want a real OS.) It’ll be interesting to use touch apps w/a trackpad…

But I’ve had success with utility apps for Dropbox, KeePass & a VPN.

@brion I was surprised that the Android layer was thorough enough for a VPN app to work, but after looking around the Chrome app store a bit, I think Google decided it was better to leverage the more mature ecosystem than try to push something that never really took off.

I think I’m going to skip September for #SFFBookClub, catch up on the pile a bit, then depending on what the October pick ends up being, either come back to the club selections at that point or pick up Dark Forest.

After listening to the audio version, I re-read Final Crisis, Rogues Revenge & Superman Beyond, plus read some of the tie-ins for the first time.

– Superman Beyond is essential.
– Submit (Black Lightning/Tattooed Man) adds a lot by showing the personal impact of the event, plus fills in plot.
– Resist (Checkmate) broadens the scope but can be skipped. (I do like using the captive villain AIs as a way to get around the ALE’s control of communication channels)

Rogues Revenge was in the works before Final Crisis, and it shows. It still works as Rogues: Rebirth, but now I think the FC connections hurt more than they help.

Revelations is a much tighter story that weaves in and out of issues 2 & 3 (if not seamlessly), picking up the Crime Bible & Vandal Savage and showing the early stages of Darkseid’s takeover. I didn’t read it originally, but I’m glad I finally got around to it.

I didn’t re-read Requiem. I still haven’t picked up Rage of the Red Lanterns. (I’d forgotten the Alpha Lanterns were involved in Final Crisis.)

I also didn’t re-read Legion of Three Worlds, which IIRC has nothing to do with Final Crisis except Superman passes through it between Superman: Beyond and his return to Final Crisis when Braniac 5 shows him the Miracle Machine. (3 versions of the LSH, none of which were the one that I actually followed).

I do want to re-read Multiversity now, though.

Interesting vocab mixup with the 7YO last night: He agreed to stop a game at “the first save point” and get ready for bed. When he didn’t, he said he hadn’t gotten to a “safe point” yet.

It turned out he didn’t understand what a save point was, because all the games he’s played up until now either don’t save progress at all, or save continuously.

Three-Body Problem ch 22

I don’t quite buy the game as a recruiting tool.

They’re supposedly all about replacing human society with the aliens’ (one way or another), but the game doesn’t tell you much about that society except that it’s persistent, can hibernate for eons, and coming for us.

It conveys key facts about their environment and biology, but doesn’t present a culture to emulate. Unless it’s in the chapters Wang misses?

@john @mastohost 422 usually means there’s a problem with the message body. Check the recipe and make sure it includes the status= part. That seems to be the most common problem.

Are you using more than one parameter in the message body? (Visibility or spoiler_text, for instance) I’ve only done a little experimenting with that, so I don’t know if the order makes any difference. Or maybe there’s an & in the text and Mastodon is treating it as a separator?

I love the idea of using NPCs to simulate a computer in-game. It reminds me of the working CPU models made in Minecraft with redstone, except more creative because NPCs aren’t designed for circuitry.

I also like the way the author mixes up the narrative structure, with documents, a personal statement, and of course the game interspersed with the regular narration.

Art, lyrics, sometimes stories…

…and credits. Who is that familiar-sounding background singer? Who wrote the song? Is it a cover? This one really reminds me of a certain composer, lyricist, or arranger’s style – can I confirm that?

The performer and title are easy to get, even if it’s not in your own library.

But the rest? If the song is notable enough for Wikipedia, great. Otherwise, who knows?
