I’m a hobbyist photographer in the Los Angeles area. I mostly go for scenic #photography, nature or architecture. I also look for funny/odd sights, and cosplay photos at comic conventions.
My main Mastodon account is @KelsonV, and I also talk about books & comics at @KelsonReads

Back in 2009 I was exploring a disused railroad spur
This popped up on a flashback post today. Back in 2009 I was exploring a disused railroad spur in an industrial park and found this 3.5″ floppy disk just sitting there.
The tracks have since been ripped out. This section was turned into a walkway for a commuter train station on the main tracks a couple hundred feet behind this spot.

Another of my #fotofails from the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. I’m terrible at holding binoculars steady, so I’ll take zoomed photos to see what’s in the distance. I think these were antelope or something, but the camera autofocused on the cables holding a balloon between the deck I was standing on and the open area below. For comparison, the giraffes at a similar distance are a lot clearer.
For a Brief, Glorious Moment, Camera-Wielding Pigeons Spied From Above
In 1908, a photographer strapped cameras to pigeons to take aerial photos.
Literally a bird’s-eye view of the world.

Some sort of purple flowers on the unmaintained greenbelt beneath a set of transmission lines. A lot of it is more of a brown belt this time of year, but I think this section gets water seeping over from neighboring yards.

This is a park at the top of a hill rising up from the Pacific Ocean. Today there were a zillion crows riding the air currents and occasionally alighting on the fence that separates the park from the steep drop-off.
I liked the idea that the crow might be bristling at the prohibition. But I miss the old signs they used to have on the fence. They had a bit more personality.

A few more photos from today’s hike.
🌸Cherry blossoms🌲
Cherry blossoms at the South Coast Botanic Garden. The whole park is curated, with some parts arranged to seem wild(ish) and others, like this one, more garden-like.

This is promising: SmugMug has bought Flickr & plans to “maintain Flickr as a standalone community of amateur and professional photographers and give the long neglected service the focus and resources it deserves.” (quote from article)
Now I don’t have to worry about Verizon shutting it down!

Murals in progress on what used to be featureless gray walls
Murals in progress on what used to be the featureless gray walls of an apartment complex. The aviation theme on two of them is due to this being Aviation Blvd.
Composition brought to you by the angle I could take a photo out the car window before the light turned green. 😁
Update: I drove by it again, and this time stopped to look. There’s a signature: on the last section: Jacque Dupuy 2018, Mural Executed by LeviPonce.com

Finally, Instagram will allow you to download an archive of your account. We’ll have to wait to see how useful it is (ex: can you easily find the caption from a photo, or do you have to search a giant HTML file with everything in it?)

Brush fire reported at the marsh preserve where I took the last photo I posted here. It’s not a very big preserve – basically a large city block, in the middle of suburbia. (There’s literally a Target across the street.)
Here’s hoping they manage to stomp it down quickly, before it does too much damage.
Got a follow-up alert that the fire’s been put out. The word “small” was included, which is a good sign. Next time I hike there, I’ll have to ask about it.

I’ve been using the same headshot across multiple social sites for ages. Now that I’m juggling multiple Mastodon accounts, it’s gotten confusing, so now I’m going for themed avatars.
It got even more confusing since I signed up with the same username across all of them!

Flashback to last summer: a red panda (sometimes called a fire fox) at the San Diego Zoo. I made a point to look for them and the penguins on that trip. For reasons. 😉

Sadly I didn’t get to see them doing much. There were several in the enclosure, maybe three or four, but the rest were either hiding in the tree or sleeping. This one was just sort of perched up there, looking around.
