We’ve finished off the “Brown Cheesey Cookies” that my wife baked, inspired by @janellecshane‘s list of AI-generated cookies.

They were quite tasty, despite being made with actual cheese! (Babybel, specifically.)

She wrote up the inventing process and final recipe here:

@nolan I wonder if this is a factor in why I get spam asking to do guest posts on my personal blog (rather than a topic-based blog). It seems weird, like doing a sponsored toot or a guest personal FB post…but people *are* doing sponsored Instagram posts, and if they’re doing it on their personal accounts too, maybe it doesn’t seem like such an outlandish idea to let someone write a guest post about casinos on your personal site. 🤷‍♂️

Comparing Voldemort and Grindelwald

Voldemort’s basically about power: people follow him because they see they’ll gain in the power structure he’s setting up, or figure that if they get on his good side, he’ll protect them.

Grindelwald is a demagogue, telling people what they want to hear in order to get them to support him. He still wants to oppress people, but his power base is built on persuasion rather than intimidation.

But since both villains draw on WW2 parallels, both wizarding wars have a strong element of metaphoric racism. Grindelvald’s followers & Voldemort’s both believe their genetic group is superior and should be in charge.

And having said that, now I’m reminded of the line in Catherynne Valente’s “Space Opera” about how *all* wars are about deciding who counts as a person, and who’s just meat.

It tracks.

Yep. Whenever someone complains about newer #StarTrek being “ruined” by social justice or progressive issues, unlike the older series…I have to wonder whether they ever actually *watched* the show they claim to remember so fondly.

Oddly related to the post I found earlier: I was listening to the Broadway album of #LesMiserables for the first time in ages.

1. I know this version of the show well enough that the gaps in the recording are as distracting as the changes in the current production & movie.

2. On My Own & A Little Fall of Rain still hit me.

3. Bring Him Home hits me now. I wasn’t expecting that. But now I associate it with the moment in the movie when Javert finds Gavroche’s body.

Updated MS Office is so proud of supporting Dark Mode in Mojave, talking up how much better it is for your eyes…

But the actual *documents* are still shown on a bright #FFFFFF background.

Ok, I suppose Word & Excel docs have a background color. But plain text emails?

I guess I’m just used to apps that fully implement it & apps that don’t at all.

@FiXato I should try Flickr just to see. I have so many photos I can totally believe it would take days, though!

I did a test export of a bunch of social networks about a year ago, before Tumblr had an exporter, and I remember most of the ones I tried took something in the range of hours or overnight.

And yeah, I ran into issues with Google because different elements are in different Google services…

I’ve been at home, sick, for the last 2 days, which means when the SSD for the new computer FINALLY arrived, I spent the afternoon installing the drive, Windows, all the drivers, and key applications, including a game the kiddo has been wanting to play for ages (but couldn’t due to hardware specs on the old PC).

And coughing and sneezing a lot.

This afternoon, after school, he finally got to play it!

For 10 minutes, before the power went out.

On Wandering.shop

To my amazement and relief, he took it in stride, even as the power kept fluctuating for the next hour.

On Wandering.shop

@FiXato The weird thing is, he usually isn’t. I think maybe he’d gotten used to waiting for the specific thing, so it didn’t bother him so much. 🤷‍♂️

But yeah, the first time your kid gets sick can be nerve-wracking.

On Wandering.shop

@sohkamyung Thanks.

The power did eventually stabilize, and he got to spend some time seriously playing.

Then I went to lie down for the rest of the afternoon. @&*$! cold.

Microsoft Edge: Making the web better through more open source collaboration

For the past few years, Microsoft has meaningfully increased participation in the open source software (OSS) community, becoming one of the world’s largest supporters of OSS projects. Today we’re announcing that we intend to adopt the Chromium open source project…

“getAdditionalData() – This method will return additional data.”

THIS IS NOT DOCUMENTATION. Not in any meaningful sense.

I’ve got an entire JavaDoc tree like that for an API I’m trying to connect to, and it’s essentially useless. The only thing I can get out of it is the parameters & return values, which my IDE can find on its own.

Missed a bunch of work-related IMs yesterday because the app had frozen (not crashed) & I didn’t need to send any, so I didn’t see it was unresponsive.

Instead, it sat there, “on” but not picking up messages, gobbling up memory until today my computer reported it was out of application RAM & I needed to force quit something. Like, say, the messenger taking up 112 GB of what I can only assume was swap space, since the computer doesn’t have that much.
