Quote of the Day

Me: Oh, that’s too many syllables for this character!
Katie: What are you trying to replace?
Me: Sanctimonious.

By writing like a madman over the Thanksgiving weekend, I’ve managed to get ahead of the goal, and complete a 47,000-word novel. Unfortunately I need a 50,000-word novel, so I’m going back and looking for things that I glossed over the first time through. There are a couple of spots where I knew I needed more scenes to show character changes, so that’s where I’m going to be focusing.

Still, I’ve got three evenings to write 3,000 words and be done by the 28th, with Thursday as a safety valve. But given the occasional outages at the Nanowrimo website this weekend, I don’t want to take any chances.

Getting ahead.

Last week my goal for Nanowrimo was to stay right on track. Hit 20K on the 12th, 25K on the 15th, 30K on the 18th. But I realized that the last few days of the month aren’t going to give me much time to write. alenxa and I are going to a concert on the 29th, leaving me only the evening of the 30th to finish the last ~3000 words. Add to that the fact that Nano’s official word counter seems to run a little shorter than OpenOffice’s, and I really need to be aiming for something like 50,500 words.

So my new goal is to finish by the 28th.

For now, that means aiming for 2,000 words a day instead of just 1,700. In some ways it’s easier, since I’ve gotten used to it. But it’s getting a lot harder to sit down and start. I’ll spend all day wanting to get home and start writing, and then I’ll sit down, check my email, read some webcomics, read a couple of blogs… And once I do start writing, I’m letting myself get distracted by web surfing that starts as, say, research on medieval surgery and veers off on a tangent that sucks up an hour reading about the overseas territories of the U.S. (Sometimes, hypertext is not your friend.)

The next few days are going to be tough. Tuesday evening’s out, and I’ve got a project at work due Wednesday that may have me staying late if I can’t figure out the solution earlier. And of course, Thursday afternoon and evening are taken.

I made 32K tonight, though. For the first time, Nano expects me to finish on deadline.

Escaping the Jungle

Or, rather, the jungle escaped.

Management finally got around to painting the new balcony this week. As you may recall, we had to clear everything off two days before Halloween, filling a corner of our living room with plants, gardening supplies, and patio furniture for what was supposed to be a three-day construction project. They tore everything out that Monday or Tuesday, and had the new balcony up by Wednesday…but then they didn’t paint it until two weeks later. (The leasing office told me that the paint was being shipped from Texas, so they had to wait for the paint to show up.)

It’s nice to have the space back. And it’s nice that we’ll be able to water all the plants without balancing acts worthy of tightrope walkers, or stretches worthy of Plastic Man. And the new balcony does seem to be better constructed than the last one.

When we moved in, we had a rickety, termite-infested balcony. The apartment complex changed hands, and one of the many things the new owners did was to replace the balconies. Of course, they told us to clear everything off in November, then changed their minds and decided to wait until January to do anything. And when they did put them up, they didn’t bother with things like properly-treated wood for outdoor use, and sap oozed out of the floorboards for months. Then the complex changed hands again. And the new new owners decided the balconies needed to be replaced again. They seem to have used the right materials for the structural elements. The floors feel more solid, and the boards are placed more closely together. But we think they reused some of the boards on the non-structural parts. We saw sap oozing from one of the railings as we placed our bench against one side.

The more things change…

Writing Weekend

Mostly random stuff this morning. Read some comics. Finished Callahan’s Cross-Time Saloon. Errands in the afternoon. Late lunch at Ruby’s, which always lends itself to not needing dinner that night. Weather went from warm and sunny to gloomy and cool during lunch.

Picked up writing early evening. My goal is to hit 20,000 words by the end of the weekend, which should put me on track (20K/50K = 12d/30d = 40%). Looks like I can make it.

Concluded that the progress gauge I’ve been using here is either using something other than time to determine the goal, or just plain b0rked. It went from 13,105 yesterday to 12,896 today. Maybe it’s based on average words/day or something.

It’s odd to be writing with the only goal being word count. But it’s also oddly liberating. That’s kind of gone down now, since I’ve been establishing a world and characters, and at the very least I have to keep things more or less consistent. I guess it’s the freedom to mess up. It doesn’t matter if what I write is crap. As long as I finish it, I can revise it as much as I want later.

I had a bit of conflict insert itself into the story today. Completely unintended, but the character was acting grumpy, and started explaining why. In such a way that’s going to make things complicated for a while.

One of the big problems I’ve been having since I started to see the overall shape is that the stuff I have the best handle on comes near the end of the story. I’m enough out of practice to not have a sense of how long it’ll take to get there, but I want to get a sense of where the characters are before I start writing too far ahead.

Full quarter

Managed ~1600 words and passed the 25% mark in Nano. Which is probably silly to play up, since it’s so close to the 20% mark that I hit yesterday. Still, from 1/5 to 1/4. Next milestone at 1/3. Unfortunately to be on track I ought to hit it by the end of the day tomorrow, and I’ve got ~3500 to go. On the plus side, I’ve got a no-plans weekend to do some catching up. (Oddly enough, the progress gauge seems to think I’m ahead 17 words. I’m not sure how it came up with a goal of 13,105 words based on 9 or 10 days, when the ultimate goal is 50,000 in 30.)

Somehow I was convinced all day today that it was, well, yesterday. This showed up in a number of things, such as forgetting that I needed to update a website for work, and thinking that 1/4 would be on schedule for today. Grumble. Watching Lost on Thursday and Veronica Mars on Wednesday can’t have helped matters.

NaNO Sleep

Writing 1666 words a day is hard. Writing 1800-2500 or more because you’ve fallen behind is harder. Throw in work, traffic, voting, food, and other plans, and it gets really hard.

The last time I got a good night’s sleep was Saturday. I missed my chance to write Sunday morning, and a trip to see a movie turned into an all-day event, so I didn’t get started until evening. I think I was up until 1:30. Monday evening was a marathon session, and I think I finished around midnight. Tuesday I didn’t get a chance to start until 11pm, and I was determined to get at least a few paragraphs down, which turned into a couple of pages. 12:30? 1:00?

It’s taking its toll.

Today I skipped my weekly trip to the comic store during lunch hour, because I knew I wouldn’t have time to read anything tonight. alenxa and I were contemplating grabbing coffee on the way home, but eventually decided to skip the Flashback Feature showing of Dr. Strangelove and just put it on Netflix. Even though we were home, we still taped Lost as both of us went into writing mode.

I broke 10,000 words today, the 20% mark. And I added some more characters, which will help me figure out what’s actually going on in the middle of the story. I figured out where it’s going Sunday night, but how it gets there is still pretty nebulous. I managed to do some good character bits today that actually set up a scene I’d already written better than what I had before.

I’m not quite on track, but I’m getting there. I think I’ll take a cue from Girl Genius and describe it as Doom Level: Middling. Goal identified, but still determining course. Almost caught up with word count. Major sleep debt, but finally getting to bed before midnight.

Crap, I need to figure out what’s going on with the villain. So far I don’t know any more than the main characters do, and they don’t know much.

Question to Californians

I realized yesterday that during the entire campaign season, I hadn’t seen a single sign, commercial or mailer for the Senate race (unless you count the “Please make your entire ballot look like this” cards that various groups send out). Hadn’t heard a radio ad. Hadn’t even received a robocall. Nothing for Feinstein. Nothing for Mountjoy. Nothing opposing either of them. If I hadn’t read the sample ballot, I wouldn’t have even know who the challenger was.

I can only infer from this that, at least in the LA/OC area (since we get the same TV stations), the race was presumed to be a slam-dunk and both candidates decided to focus their campaigns elsewhere. Either that or I really wasn’t paying attention.

(Similarly, in our House district only the Democratic challenger posted campaign signs, and the incumbent Republican still won handily. But then, this district has run Republican since dinosaurs roamed the Earth.)

Did anyone else see any serious CA Senate campaigning?

Catching up

Friday night: mad dash through Nanowrimo. Still nebulous, not much in the way of direction. Still behind a day.

Saturday morning: laundry. (Yay fun.)

Saturday afternoon/evening: Went to katyakoshka and David’s wedding. Got to talk with the bride, got to finally meet the groom, got to hang out with sekl and non_seqvitvr. I heartily approve of a wedding where the bride marches down the aisle to the Masterpiece Theatre theme.

Sunday morning: Was going to work on Nano (now two days behind) but ended up reading Callahan’s Cross-Time Saloon instead.

Sunday afternoon: Went to see The Prestige. v. good. As we walked in, we saw that they were running The Nightmare Before Christmas in 3-D. After the first movie, figured what the heck? Got tickets for later showing. Dropped by Jamba Juice, then Barnes & Noble (finally picked up our own copy of the Temeraire series), then a couple of clothing stores (alenxa found a dress). Re: movie: I was very impressed at how seamlessly they managed to match the look of the film. I couldn’t remember which eye got the original film, and which eye got the shifted CGI copy… and I couldn’t tell. Of course, after the first few minutes, I wasn’t looking! Afterward went to Cheesecake Factory for the first time in… well, years, come to think of it (unless you count take-out cheesecake). Dinner conversation was mostly about our respective stories, mostly in veiled references, though it actually helped me crystallize a number of things about my story… including where it was going!

Sunday night: Mad writing until way too late in the morning… and forgot to update my word count until after midnight, so it looks like I skipped two days. Grrr.

Work today, then most of the evening madly typing, with a break for Heroes. As of when I started this entry, I’m officially 126 words ahead of goal. Of course by the time I finish, it’ll be after midnight, so I’ll be 1500 words behind…

Edit: Realized that the numbers didn’t add up, and the progress gauge above doesn’t measure what I thought it did. I thought it measured your word count against the count you should reach by the end of the day to be on track to 50,000 at the end of the month. It actually measures the count you should have reached by the beginning of the day. So I hadn’t actually caught up, and I’m still ~1200 words behind. And I don’t think I’ll have time to write ~2900 words today.

Nano

I’ve decided to break nearly a decade of writer’s block by joining NaNoWriMo. Technically I’ve written quite a bit — 250 posts here on LiveJournal, 1000+ posts at K-Squared Ramblings, hundreds of articles about Flash comics, the Alternate Browser Alliance website, etc. But aside from some Literary Guild projects back in college, I can only think of two works of fiction that I’ve finished since 1996: one short story and one short-short story.

Part of the problem is just getting started. I’ll have an idea but decide it’s not worth writing about, or I won’t have any ideas at all. I started a couple of fanfics, but they petered out when I realized I had a setting, but no plot.

I still didn’t have any ideas for Nanowrimo. I figured I’d just start writing and see what happened. Maybe it’ll be total crap, maybe it’ll be 50,000 words that I can chop down to a decent 10,000-word story. I started a day late, but managed to get 1150 words last night. I’m still trying to nail down the genre, when/where it’s set, the main character’s background. I have no idea where it’s going. But it’s two pages, and I made myself write description and narration instead of just dialogue. (That’s always been my Achilles heel with writing — I tend to fall back on dialogue and end up with something that looks like a script in prose format.)

Halloween Roundup

I think the time change drove people temporarily insane earlier this week. People unaccustomed to driving home in the dark clogged the streets in the evenings from Monday through Wednesday. As a result, alenxa and I didn’t get home until 6:40 on Halloween.

We walked in the door. I immediately turned on all the lights so that it was clear someone was home, then grabbed a large bowl and emptied bags of candy into it. Meanwhile Katie put the finishing touches on her vampire costume: the gloves, cape and fangs that she hadn’t worn on the drive home. We were hurrying, because we could hear a group of trick-or-treaters below, collecting candy from our downstairs neighbors.

Footsteps tromped up the stairs, and the Vampiress was ready. They knocked on the door next to us. No one answered. (Our next-door neighbors had moved out on Friday.) They knocked again. No answer. And they went back downstairs. We heard one of the kids suggest trying the other door, but they didn’t.

I wrote up a “Use Other Door →” sign and taped it on the empty apartment.

In the end, we got a grand total of two groups knocking on our door. Anyone want some extra Skittles and Tootsie Rolls? (Sorry, the Twix bars stay!)

Feng-shui Klotski

A good chunk of this weekend was taken up moving stuff around the apartment. Management has been rebuilding all the balconies. (This is probably a good thing, since the previous owners didn’t bother to use treated wood, and sap leaked out from the floorboards for several months.) On Thursday, we got the notice that they would start on our group on Monday. This means that we have to move everything off of the balcony.

Our next-door neighbors lucked out, since they just moved out on Friday. Though I suppose that meant they had to clear off the balcony anyway.

So Saturday afternoon was spent clearing space out of the storage section of the dining area so that we could move stuff out of the the living room so that we could make room for all the plants and the patio furniture. Then Sunday morning was spent hauling stuff inside. By the time we were done, a corner of our living room had been transformed into an indoor jungle:

Indoor Jungle

With any luck, they’ll be faster about it than the previous management was. The previous management warned us to clear everything off overnight, then changed their minds, and didn’t actually start work until two months later. Not that they told us they had postponed it indefinitely, so we went quite a while wondering when they would start, and assuming we couldn’t put things back, until we finally asked. Fortunately we had less stuff on the balcony back then.

Ubiquitous Narration

I spent a good chunk of yesterday afternoon playing The Bard’s Tale (the new one, not the one in my icon) while alenxa was off at kayshabeast’s bridal shower. After a many months-long break. This time I figured out the combat system, so I was able to get past the starting dungeon.

Anyway, after Katie got home, we watched an episode of Teen Titans with dinner. It was structured as a fairy tale, complete with a narrator. The narrator sounded really familiar, but I couldn’t quite place where I’d heard his voice before. The credits listed him has Tony Jay, which didn’t ring a bell, so Katie looked him up at IMDB.

Turns out he was the narrator on The Bard’s Tale, and I’d been hearing his voice all afternoon.

Weekend Report

Friday: Stuck at work trying frantically to finish a website redesign that had to be done by that evening. I honestly don’t remember anything about the evening, as the still-not-gone cold slammed into me full force once the adrenaline rush wore off.

Saturday: alenxa and I risked going out to lunch, and managed not to cough all over the restaurant. Watched a couple episodes of Justice League and finally saw The Bride of Frankenstein (which I suspect I saw when I was maybe 10, because I recognized the framing sequence — more about that later — but I don’t remember much more). It’s interesting to see just how much of the Frankenstein mythos not only isn’t in the book, but isn’t in the first movie. Much of the tearing around the countryside is in Bride, for instance, and Igor doesn’t even show up until the third movie, Son of Frankenstein (and he’s a far cry from the mad doctor’s faithful assistant!) Watched an episode of Crusade, “The Well of Forever,” which explores hyperspace and starts to hint at Galen’s backstory (told in much more detail in the Technomage novels.)

I also caught up on some graphic novels, including Sam Kieth’s Four Women (disturbing and creepy, but a good story) and The Sandwalk Adventures, a somewhat offbeat story that covers the basics of Darwin’s theory of natural selection. Sort of the “Cartoon History of Evolution.”

Sunday: Ran some errands. Finished Black Powder War. Actually ran the air conditioner for a while, though the floorplan means it doesn’t actually accomplish much. Went to Orange’s International Street Fair for dinner.

Monday: More errands. Re-read the second round of Tangent Comics that DC put out in 1998. This was the series where they took the names of various heroes and villains and created entirely new characters. Overall, the first set was better, but it was still an interesting side universe that I would have liked to see more of. Caught up on a couple of items I’d been meaning to add to my website. Also read half of the first book of A Distant Soil, which I first heard about ~20 years go and have been meaning to check out for ~10 years. After several issues of setting up a major space epic, it’s suddenly shifted to an Arthurian battle. I assume the plotlines will converge by the end of the book. Watched about half of Grosse Point Blank. It wasn’t as good as I remembered, and when Katie said it just wasn’t grabbing her, I realized I was more interested in showing her the movie than re-watching it myself.

I’m finally getting over this #$!@ cold, though I’m still coughing from time to time. And with the heat and dehydration, it’s still leaving me feeling completely wiped out several times a day. Oddly enough, I found myself looking forward to going back to work because the AC (when it’s running, anyway) is more effective than what we have at home. At least my ears are finally getting unplugged. Lunch on Saturday was really odd, because voices were muffled, but the background music wasn’t. Of course now everything sounds oddly loud.

The Dread Pirate Katie

We went out to the Spectrum on Friday to see Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest. alenxa dressed up for the occasion, in the latest variation of her pirate costume.

The Dread Pirate Katie

Still in Line

As you can see, she was far from the only pirate in line. Two groups ahead of us there were about 5 or six people in full pirate regalia, who swelled to around a dozen, some quite elaborate, by the time the line let in. Once their whole group was there, they got someone to take a group photo.

Oh, on the subject of those cosplay photos from Comic-Con… the 2004 set has gotten a lot of hits from people searching for Elizabeth Swann costume. PageRank can do funny things

Moulin Rouge

Went to see a screening of Moulin Rouge last night. It was a strange experience — stranger than watching it with a small group of friends — though that was largely due to the problem with the theater sound system.

The picture was perfect throughout the whole movie, but the sound would occasionally cut out or become distorted. If you’ve ever tried renaming a non-sound file as a .wav and trying to play it, that’s kind of what it sounded like. “Fortunately,” the largely late-teen-early-20s female audience knew all the words and sang Nicole Kidman’s part while a smaller group ran back to tell the manager that yes, the sound was out again.

Then there was “Spectacular, Spectacular,” which unfolded with a mental overlay of the AMV…

The Long Weekend

Friday: Goo Goo Dolls/ Counting Crows concert at it’s-still-Irvine-Meadows-’cause-“Verizon-Wireless-Amphitheater”-just-sounds-dumb. Nifty view of the central Orange County valley before the sun set.

Saturday. Spent the day lying on the couch with a fan running, catching up on the Babylon 5 script book commentaries. So far I’ve only read about 1/4 of one script, but the introductions are a fascinating insight into the process of making the show. Given how much was out in the open (since JMS spent several hours a night online during production), some of the stuff that wasn’t revealed back then is mighty interesting. (Example: we all thought season 4 was compressed because they weren’t sure they’d get a season 5, and wanted to get as much done as they could. It turns out that at the beginning of the season, they were told in no uncertain terms that there would not be a season 5. So getting that fifth season on TNT was a real surprise.)

Dinner at CPK, then Superman Returns Enjoyed it, but no interest in seeing it again. It already felt like deja vu since there were so many references to the first two movies with Christopher Reeve. There were some great moments, but overall it was just kind of okay.

Sunday: Finished Bad Twin. Decent book, but not exactly a major insight into the secrets of Lost. Waited several hours until checking my email, at which point I discovered I really should’ve checked earlier… so I could bring a server back online. Went down to the office, brought the server up. alenxa tagged along and we had lunch at the crepe place at the Spectrum. Happened to glance over at one of the wall alcoves, which held a vinegar bottle… labeled Temeraire. After some shopping for food for upcoming family get-togethers, went home and played Heroes V for a few hours. Fortunately I was still awake when the same server went down again at 1AM. So I drove back, brought it online, figured out a way to make sure that it would automatically start up again next time, then came home. Still trying to diagnose the cause, but whatever it is does seem to like holiday weekends…

Monday: Traditionally, the 4th of July consists of hanging around at home followed by looking for fireworks. This year, both our families wanted to get together. So on Monday we went to visit my grandparents, carpooling with my parents and my brother. My aunt and her husband brought their dogs, which meant I spent most of the afternoon in a Benadryl-induced funk, despite drinking way too much Dr. Pepper to offset it.

Tuesday: I squeezed in an hour or two of Heroes in the morning, then it was off to visit Katie’s family, with more BBQ. Dinner was relatively early, so we cleared out around 7:00 so we could make it back to Laguna Beach for the fireworks display there. They launch the fireworks off one of the bluffs, out over the ocean, and the viewing is pretty good from the beach. We caught the tail end of it a couple of years ago, while driving around looking for displays. Two years ago we got there too late and missed the entire show while we walked from the car out to the beach. (Hey, have you ever tried finding parking in Laguna Beach?) Last year I was sick, so we just walked out to where we could see the local display. This year we made it with plenty of time to spare, parking up on Forest (roughly in line with the Laguna Playhouse, and maybe a few hundred feet from the entrance to Tivoli Terrace, where we had our wedding), and snagged a spot on the beach. The wind blew the smoke in our direction, so a lot of the fireworks were half-obscured, but they lit up the smoke a lot more than I can remember seeing anywhere else. After the show, we did our semi-traditional stop at Diedrich across the street.

Today: Back to work. I’ve been stress-testing the server, trying to get it to crash under controlled circumstances so I can get some information about what’s causing the problem… and it just won’t crash!
