Amtrak to SDCC

I’ve done Amtrak from LA a couple of times, and it’s a nice way to cut down on the driving stress. Driving 2.5-3 hours twice daily is grueling, especially when it overlaps with rush hour. Plus you have time to read your new comics on the way home!

But it does lock down your schedule a bit on the days you take it, and the line to get on the last northbound train of the evening is…actually not too much worse than some other comic-con lines, now that I think about it.

Authentic Voodoo Doughnuts Line

Authentic Voodoo Doughnuts Line on Flickr.

On my trip to Portland last month, we decided we had to make one stop at Voodoo Doughnuts. It was suggested that we check out the secondary location out in the suburbs to avoid the crowds at the downtown location.

We got the authentic experience anyway.

Bonus: The twenty-somethings in line behind us were singing Les Mis.

Background that’s important for this particular story and background that exists

I think one problem we tend to run into as fans is that we often can’t tell the difference between background that’s important for this particular story and background that exists, but maybe isn’t critical to know right now. That carries over into the writing style as fans turn pro and as writers target the fan audience.

Portland Aquarium not required to have permits for 2,200 species – KOIN 6

Carla Castaño: The co-owner of the Portland Aquarium in Milwaukie was arrested Thursday in Boise on charges of illegally harvesting marine life.

Ammon Covino, president of the Idaho Aquarium, and Christopher Conk, Idaho Aquarium secretary, were arrested Thursday.

Prosecutors in Idaho say the men bought four illegally harvested spotted eagle rays and two lemon sharks for approximately $6,300 and transported them to Idaho.

Of the 2,200 different species currently inside the Portland Aquarium, not one requires a permit by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. However, the two exhibits that are vacant, for Puffins and River Otters, do.

Weird. I was looking for the address so I could map my photos from last week, and found this.
