I finally posted my answer to @szczezuja ‘s question, “How did you use the Internet in 1990-2005?”

It ended up a lot longer than it probably needed to be, and every time I tried to cut it down I ended up adding more. So I finally decided to just post it in its current form.

Using the Internet in the 1990s (and early 2000s)

For the record: lots of juncos, a bunch of what are probably lesser goldfinches but could be warblers, and at least one woodpecker, and I think I caught a glimpse of a bluebird or (more likely this time of year) a California scrub-jay, but I’m not sure.

Plus a few monarchs and a mourning cloak butterfly, none of which paused while I was there.

Went for a walk at a “wilderness” park. (It’s more wilderness-themed than actual wilderness, though a local conservation group is slowly replacing the “let’s put in stuff that looks wilderness-y!” plants with native habitat.)

Saw a ton of birds in one corner, but they were really good at hiding. And even when I managed to catch them on camera, most of my photos came out like this.

Auto-focus? More like oughta-focus.

🤷‍♂️

Following up on the puzzle metaphor: You look for more pieces, you figure out where they fit, you set aside the ones that turn out to be from a different puzzle, and you get a better idea of what the picture is as you go along.

covid vaccines (+)

Pfizer (among others) is gearing up to build an omicron-specific booster, but they don’t know if it’ll be needed yet.

What I find most interesting:

They developed vaccines for both beta and delta, but shelved them when beta failed to gain traction and the original vaccine turned out to be able to handle delta.

And apparently #Saga is finally coming back! I’m going to have to go back to my local comic shop and ask them to put it (back?) on my pull list.

If I still have a pull list!

I don’t think I’ve been there in almost a year. Most of what I’d been reading in early 2020 was either wrapping up or getting canceled anyway, and I went in a couple of times to pick up the last few issues.

An actual email I got today

“A friendly reminder that your membership at Phi Beta Kappa Alumni in Southern California is about to expire on Saturday, January 01, 2022.

Please note that there is a bug in the software that will state your renewal (when you make it) is good until January 1, 2019. In fact, the actual renewal will be good until January 1, 2020. We are trying to get the system developer to correct this bug.”

Um…about those dates…

They sent a follow-up correction, but the fact that it’s a freaking academic honor society that messed it up is kind of hilarious.
