Western Fence Lizard (on cinder blocks)
Tree Squirrels
I saw this squirrel next to a tree while walking down the sidewalk. I stopped, we both stared at each other for a moment, then it went around the tree. I got down to take a second photo and it stood up on its hind legs, posing, though it gave up and realized I wasn’t going to feed it by the time I had the camera ready.

Plane Hopping
When wild jackrabbits roamed the fields of LAX. (Los Angeles Times)
From time to time passengers in giant air liners are amused when giant jacks race the plane on take-off. Until now, none of the rabbits has left the ground.
Apparently they were eventually wiped out by foxes, who have since disappeared as well. (Also, most – but not all – of the area has been paved.)
It reminds me of all the rabbits we used to see near UCI in the 90s, especially out in the housing complexes on the edge. A lot of that open space has been filled in since then. I wonder if they still have much in the way of rabbits. # According to Nentuaby on Mastodon, “Campus was still plastered in ’em at least as late as 2010.”
Back to the LA Times:
The jackrabbit photo by Art Rogers was published as a double-page spread in the Dec. 2, 1946, edition of Life magazine.
Fox Squirrel (posing at Wilson Park)
Most of the squirrels I see are really skittish around people. This one, in a city park, walked up to me and posed. I think it was expecting me to feed it.
Tree Squirrels
I heard a child shout, “Squirrel!” off somewhere behind me, and then this squirrel came running across the lawn and then up a tree.

Two #squirrels spotted on a hike last weekend: The good photos, and the two-seconds-later photos.
The first one took a while for me to spot inside the bush (though I could hear it), and then it started chowing down on the berries.
The second one looked like it was checking both ways before crossing the street, and then it took off in a blur. So maybe it was.
Fox Squirrel (ready to cross the road)
Squirrel (hiding)
I heard a lot more animals than I saw on this walk, and in this case I heard a *lot* of rustling from these bushes. I finally spotted the squirrel eating berries just behind the outer layer of leaves.
Western Fence Lizards (on curb)
Both lizards were doing make-myself-look-big pushups.
Fox Squirrel (vs. dog)
I saw this squirrel climb down a tree in a city park and start running across the ground. As I was getting my camera out, a dog spotted it, got away from its owner, ran after the squirrel and pounced. The squirrel jumped up onto this tree just in time and scurried up. The dog's owner called it back. And then the squirrel slowly climbed back down to this point (still higher than the dog's jump, just in case it came back) and paused to look around to make sure it was safe again.
