Helix Comics

comment left at Comics Worth Reading’s post, The Helix Titles That Live On; Time Breakers Crowdfunding

Interesting: I think Sheva’s War and The Dome: Ground Zero were the only ones I picked up at the time. I might even still have Sheva’s War in a box somewhere, though I don’t remember anything at all about The Dome.

I read Michael Moorcock’s Multiverse as a TPB, but I’m not sure what imprint it was by that time. Transmet, of course, I discovered after it moved to Vertigo.

Of the rest, only Cyberella rings a bell, but when I read about the Time Breakers collection, I immediately thought 2 things: “Why didn’t I notice this when it was new?” And “I have to buy it now!”

In retrospect, it’s weird to me that I skipped most of the Helix line. But I think I was still mostly reading superhero comics at the time.

Apparently a recent-ish issue of The Flash made a reference to the “Flush Man” name that the comic was published under in Argentina back in the 1980s

I should look for the collection of cover scans that an Argentine Flash fan sent me ages ago!

Flash TV finale

I haven’t watched it, but apparently the big villain in the 4-parter is…

Cobalt Blue.

CBR describes him as a “classic Flash villain” and “iconic.”
https://www.cbr.com/the-flash-cobalt-blue-set-photos/

I’ve been out of the fandom for a while, but back in the late 90s early 2000s there was a large contingent of Flash fans (specifically Barry Allen fans) who HATED the character. Mostly because in the comics he was Barry’s separated-at-birth twin.

On Wandering.shop

I find this hilarious. Even if it’s just the fact that we’re still in the 1990s phase of the nostalgia cycle, the idea that Cobalt Blue is worth using for a TV series finale? Never would have occurred to people back in the day.

And TBH I kind of feel vindicated for the blog post I wrote back in 2008 arguing that if the character had been introduced back in the Silver Age, he *would* have been a classic.

Cobalt Blue, Classic Rogue?

I guess now he is!?

On Wandering.shop

Kind of wish I hadn’t deleted that CobaltBluePrime handle on Twitter back in November. It would’ve been perfect to bring it back and post “AT LAST MY TIME HAS COME” or something like that.

(I set it up for a 2011 April Fools’ joke where the blog was rebranded as Cobalt Blue Online for the day and we posted a bunch of Cobalt Blue-themed articles)

Though I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised. I mean, this is the show that successfully transformed Vibe into a beloved character!

I don’t think I’ve been there since summer or fall 2020. I was down to one series at the point that publishing shut down for 2 months, and it was a limited series. I went in during a lull in cases to pick up the last few issues.

At least they managed to hang on. I drive past the place occasionally on my way somewhere else, and they’re still open.

People complaining about a non-binary actor being cast as Desire in Sandman. Did they even read the comics?

Don’t like the ‘woke’ casting of Netflix’s ‘Sandman’ series? Neil Gaiman doesn’t care
The comic was a genre-busting, gender-bending horror-ish fantasia that simply didn’t care about convention. So when self-proclaimed fans objected to the show casting nonbinary and Black actors, how did they think Gaiman would react?

On Wandering.shop

And not surprisingly they’re also complaining about Black actors, both in roles where the race isn’t a key characteristic and in roles where the character doesn’t technically *have* a race (ex. any of the Endless, who aren’t even human, they just appear in a form familiar to whoever is seeing them – I mean, we’ve seen some of them as cats and Martians).

On Wandering.shop

And the idea that Gaiman is somehow capitulating to “wokeness” or progressiveness…again, did they even read the source material that they claim is being sullied?

Sandman was about stories and change. Dream’s main character arc is realizing that he needs to change, but can’t.

And it was groundbreaking in who it included and what stories it told in the medium…30 years ago.

Freezing the form of the story would be kind of weirdly metatextual, but not nearly as awesome as making something that’s groundbreaking *today* could be.

While looking at this preview of Far Sector, an upcoming Green Lantern comic by N.K. Jemisin & Jamal Campbell, I had an odd realization.

For years, the DC Universe was a draw for me. By comparison, Marvel felt unfamiliar. And I would read DC comics across the line, and Marvel comics that were off in some corner like Alias (now Jessica Jones).

Since the New 52, I’ve felt less & less connected to the DCU…and now I’m reading DC the way I used to read Marvel.

Going to miss Vertigo

Going to miss #Vertigo, but IMO it’s less the name than the editorial independence that matters. Not sure if DC Black Label will have that. #DCComics

As for consolidating DC Ink and Zoom into DC Kids…I’ve got to agree with the commenter who points out that it’s likely to turn kids in the 8-12 target audience away from it. Kids that age don’t like feeling talked down to.

about what’s going on with Heroes in Crisis and The Flash, but unlike anger, severe disappointment just isn’t motivating.

Fortunately, Ed wrote something better than I could have, and broadened it to the way Heroes in Crisis is handling mental illness as compared to The Unstoppable Wasp.

Re: Spoilers for upcoming comics in April!

I haven’t been able to bring myself to open an issue of The Flash since I saw the list of casualties in Heroes In Crisis #1. I’ve been buying them. I’ve picked the next one up a couple of times to read it. But I just haven’t been able to do it.

I’m getting close to the why-are-you-buying-it-if-you-aren’t-reading-it point.
