Cooper’s Hawk on a Fence

I startled a ground squirrel while looking for something that was chirping in a fenced-off area of a park with a pair of transmission towers.

The squirrel hid, but this hawk – which I suspect was looking for the squirrel – flew out and perched on the fence for a few minutes before flying up to one of the lower struts on the nearer tower.

A brown and white hawk with a yellow hooked beak and hellow talons perched on a narrow beam against a blue sky.

A brown and white hawk perched on a chain link fence, seen roughly on a level, with blurry trees and telephone poles in the background.

I heard repeated chirping from a fenced-off area of a park with a pair of transmission towers. As I got closer, I couldn’t spot a bird doing the chirping, but I did see a ground squirrel hiding under a small palm tree. I took a photo from a distance, then moved closer, at which point I startled the squirrel, which ran into one of the holes, and also a hawk, which flew from who knows where inside the fenced area to the edge of the fence. I was able to walk around and get some nice clear shots of the hawk, both as it sat on the fence and after it flew up onto one of the lower struts of the nearer tower.

Cooper’s Hawk (in tree, full)

Probably a Cooper’s Hawk, spotted on a walk this afternoon. It flew up to a telephone pole, alighted there for a few seconds, and as I was trying to line up a shot with the camera, it took off again, then flew a few houses down the street to perch in this tree.

I also posted a closer crop on my *ahem* @AddHawk account

Who knew a hawk could be a birb?

Who knew a hawk could be a #birb?

Spotted in a park. Probably a Cooper’s Hawk.

I heard a lot of chirping from this tree, and saw a cluster that looks like it could be a nest near where this hawk was standing guard. It just kind of looked around the whole time even as I walked past the tree. If it was standing guard, it must have been able to tell I wasn’t a threat.

Cooper’s Hawk (Takeoff!)

A Cooper’s Hawk I spotted on a walk around the neighborhood.

I heard a *lot* of sparrows chirping in a tree behind a house. Then this hawk flew up and perched on the nearest telephone pole and the sparrows all just dropped silent. It stayed up there for a few minutes, then flew to the next pole, then flew off out of view.

The photos aren’t great, but I like that I managed to catch it this clearly. The last one I saw, I only had my phone with me.

Cooper’s Hawk (with lunch)

Accipiters

I saw this hawk(?) from a distance, standing above the dead bird behind it on the suburban sidewalk up ahead. Unfortunately all I had was my phone, so I just zoomed as much as I could and started walking slowly, hoping I wouldn’t scare it off. I was a couple of carlengths away when it flew off and stopped in a tree across the street. I took another photo (which didn’t come out) and walked away.

My guess: 1. it killed the crow. 2. When it went to the tree, it was waiting nearby for me to leave so it could go back.
