Birds of Madrona Marsh

#Birds of #MadronaMarsh. There were a zillion red-winged blackbirds, at least one group of goldfinches, some starlings, and of course the usual geese and ducks.

For the record: lots of juncos, a bunch of what are probably lesser goldfinches but could be warblers, and at least one woodpecker, and I think I caught a glimpse of a bluebird or (more likely this time of year) a California scrub-jay, but I’m not sure.

Plus a few monarchs and a mourning cloak butterfly, none of which paused while I was there.

Two birds spotted while hiking the trails on top of the coastal bluffs

Two birds spotted while hiking the trails on top of the coastal bluffs southwest of Los Angeles. First a lesser goldfinch, which took me forever to actually catch on camera (there were 3 or 4 of them flitting around and not stopping for very long anywhere!) and a black phoebe that was perched a few yards from the trail.

I saw (and heard) a bunch of finches – some house finches, and at least this one lesser goldfinch – when I took the trash bins out this morning. So I went back in, washed my hands and grabbed the camera.

Finally recovered enough from the flu to get out for a walk in the neighborhood (while that’s still an option).

I think this first bird (possibly a goldfinch?) was trying to practice social distancing, though the crow in the third photo seems to be doing a better job. The house finch was such a bright red that I thought it had to be another kind of bird until I looked at the photos.

Some birds I saw on a hike today

Some #birds I saw on a hike today:

  1. One of several Black Phoebes I saw around the grounds of the park
  2. A California Towhee that had just chased another bird away from this puddle.
  3. One of the clearest views I’ve had of a hummingbird away from a feeder.
  4. Possibly a goldfinch? There were a bunch of them in the same bush.
