Interesting story about the history of the Los Angeles River (and paving it).

Paving the Los Angeles River wasn’t an egalitarian idea. The plan for revitalizing it should be

As we remake the Los Angeles River once again, we ought to allow the river to re-make us, too — into a more equitable city.

The hour grows late, and Los Angeles rises out of the palm trees for another night.

The hour grows late, and Los Angeles rises out of the palm trees, preparing for another night. 😉

Seriously, though, I was trying out different settings on a camera with a good zoom lens.

In response to KemoNine asking about the haze:

By LA standards, for 11 miles away, that’s crystal clear!

We’ve actually had some really clear days over the last month or so, especially after the winds have blown all the smog out to sea (before they bring all the dust out from the desert a day or two later), interspersed with smoggy days and days when the sky is full of smoke from wildfires in the mountains or canyons. The smoke from the massive fire raging in Ventura is mostly being blown the other way from here.

It’s a lot better than it used to be 20 years ago. A couple of years back on a visit to my parents’, I noticed that I could see the mountains from their front door. I had never noticed that the whole time I was growing up there!

And even that was better than their stories of LA smog in the 60s: outdoor school activities cancelled due to smog, being unable to see the end of a block, observing sunspots directly…

Air quality laws have made a huge difference!

Downtown Los Angeles from a distance. Despite the heat, the air is surprisingly clear over the LA basin. This is taken from the LAX area with a zoom lens. There’s still some atmospheric wiggling, but you can actually see the spire (and crane) on top of the Wilshire Grand Center, which is now the tallest building in LA.

Crenshaw Line Metro rail construction. Near LAX and The Proud Bird, the bridge spans 111th alongside Aviation Blvd. In the mirror (yes, I know I need to clean it) you can see the raised section that will connect the bridge from the existing Green Line Aviation Station over Imperial Hwy to this one. Just past the intersection, the track dives down below ground as it passes the end of the runway, after which it climbs up again to the future train station at Century Blvd.

Worth noting that LA’s air continues to get better, and the region has seen a *90% reduction in particle pollution* over the 17 years the report has been running.

LA Still Has Nation’s Unhealthiest Air, But There’s Reason to Breathe Easier

Los Angeles continues to earn its reputation for smog, but air pollution dropped to the lowest level in 17 years of monitoring.

Storm water pond: Now with added storm water!

It rained pretty hard last night near home, and clearly it rained hard enough here that mud was flowing over the sidewalks, and the detention pond still had water at noon. On a related note, yes, they’re still watering the lawn too much here. At least there’s a lot less of it than there used to be before the renovation, between the hollow and all the planters full of native and otherwise less-thirsty plants and wood chips behind where I was standing. #pond #losangeles #rainwater
