Bees that buzz……
This northern mockingbird flew across the street and landed on a lawn.
This northern mockingbird flew across the street and landed on a lawn. While I got the camera out, it flew up to a rooftop, then flew across the street again to land on a signpost, where it stretched its wings briefly (as seen here).
Fun fact: mockingbirds are able to recognize individual humans, and their ability to mimic sounds extends beyond birds to cats, dogs, and even car alarms.
“Hey. Human. Yeah, you. Got any food?”
“Hey. Human. Yeah, you. Got any food?”
“No? Well, fine.” *stalks off*
(Seriously, it walked right up to me while I was crouching down to take a photo.)
A mother duck and her ducklings
A mother duck and her ducklings, spotted swimming around the pond at the park this evening.

This shot came out much clearer! It’s a gulf fritillary.

I didn’t have much luck photographing #birds this time, but I did catch some good shots of this one. Though I’m not sure what it is. Maybe a warbler?
This #squirrel was one of three that scattered as I approached a trail junction. The other two hid. This one froze. It blended in very well!
And while I *saw* lots of #butterflies, this mourning cloak is the only one that held still long enough for me to get a #photo.
Some flowers and a tree that puts out deep red leaves in spring.
Some flowers and a tree that puts out deep red leaves in spring. It wasn’t labeled, but I think it’s a Krauter Vesuvius plum. Lit from the front the leaves are a deep purple. Lit from behind they’re this super-bright red.
I cast “detect evil” on the gazebo!

Finally made it out to the botanical gardens up in the hills for a hike.
Finally made it out to the botanical gardens up in the hills for a hike. They’ve actually stayed open this whole time by requiring reservations to limit the number of people on the grounds at a time. (Also face masks, distancing, and closing off benches and some sections.)
Ironically there were more people there than I usually see. The limits must be against an increased demand due to the fact that they were actually open!

A monarch butterfly in flight
A #monarch butterfly in flight. I’ve been seeing one or two each time I go for a walk in the neighborhood, but mostly they’re flying around too much for me to get a decent photo. This one decided to stick around this one bush for a while.

About a week later…
Someone on Flickr invited this photo to a UFO/paranormal/unexplained phenomena group. 😕
Maybe they meant to invite it to something else they manage?
Or are there butterfly UFO stories out there that I’m missing?
Red-Tailed Hawk (in palm tree)
I saw 4 or 5 crows repeatedly dive-bombing the top of this palm tree, cawing loudly, and heard the screech of a hawk at one point. It wasn’t until after the crows had given up that I made it to the other side where I could see this hawk just holding still. It flew off a little bit later.
House Finch (on a red post)
Doves always look silly to me when they’re in the middle of turning their heads.
Weeds or wildflowers?
Weeds or wildflowers? Sometimes the line is blurry.
(Bermuda Buttercups, a kind of woodsorrel, growing through a hedge.)
I don’t remember where this stone wall is
I don’t remember where this stone wall is, but it’s apparently near enough I could walk to it, because I took the photo in the last two months and I’m pretty sure it’s not next to the grocery store.
Ducks at a city park
Ducks at a city park that’s recently re-opened the walkways and open space, though facilities and playgrounds remain closed.
1. Join me for a drink?
2. OK, ducks can’t read.
3. Three ducks ignoring a pigeon.
Some photos of the park facilities and warning signs:
