Let the biker beware.

Let the biker beware.

It may look innocuous now, but when it produces zillions of seed pods with sharp spikes on them, it’ll *earn* the name puncture vine.

I *hate* these things, and they grow all along the nearest bike path. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve patched bicycle tires because of them.

I walked along a bike path today and could not believe how many puncture vine plants I saw. No wonder I've had to patch so many flat tires!

If it's possible for a plant to evolve into the natural enemy of the bicycle, this plant is it. It's literally in the caltrop family. I swear it's lining the bike path, waiting to ambush its prey.

Finally spotted the plant whose spiky seeds keep puncturing bike tires. It’s a low, creeping mat that can grow right next to the path and spread onto it, and the seeds grow in clusters. The dried seeds’ spikes punch straight through, sometimes to the inner tube.

Unfortunately I have no idea what it is, since it doesn’t match my previous guess (sand burr / sand spur) from what I can tell.
