Heerman’s gull
Heerman’s gull. They’re not as common here as western gulls, but I do see them occasionally. This one didn’t feel like trying to fly in the wind, which was blowing other seagulls sideways. And in some cases backward.
Here’s a seagull I saw skimming along the waves
On another note, here’s a seagull I saw skimming along the waves on that walk.

Flight to the sea.
“What the…They said they were going to wait for me!”

“C’mon, I’m trying to be serious here!”

Probably #Steinbeck would have said it a bit more elegantly, but I’m sure he would have thought it.

I had to be somewhere near the coast this morning, so I figured I’d take 10 minutes to look for seagulls for #iNaturalist. I found a lot of them, but they were mostly hanging out on the beach, not flying around. Still, that’s plenty for observation purposes, and I did manage to catch this shot too!
I don’t think there’s *quite* enough detail on the seagull here to identify the species!
I found this while looking for old pictures to submit to iNaturalist. I don’t think there’s *quite* enough detail on the seagull here to identify the species!
The ship, incidentally, is the Queen Mary, launched in the 1930s as a transatlantic liner. It’s been permanently docked in Long Beach, California for several decades and is now run as a hotel.

I imagine this #seagull reading the “No fishing” sign and being very disappointed.
An #egret wading in a marsh.
And another egret (I thought it was a crane at the time, but 3 people have IDed it as an egret) that I caught walking by the side of the road.
Funny thing is: I didn’t use the Flickr-to-#iNaturalist importer for these. On Flickr I posted the full, composed shots. For iNat, I wanted to crop them to show the birds more clearly.
This one came out much better 😁
Disinterested Seagull
Disinterested Seagull: “What, there’s a sunset behind me? Nah, can’t make me look!”
Last Sunday, after a hectic afternoon running errands through Christmas shopping crowds, I went out to the Manhattan Beach Pier to watch the waves and relax. This seagull seemed to have the “relax” part down already.
Taking wing
Liftoff!
I slowly crept up toward the seagull hoping to get a photo of it perched on that pole, but it calmly turned around and flew off. I thought I’d missed it when I snapped the photo, but it turns out that I’d caught it just unfurling its wings.
And yes, the water really is that green. Ew.

The Sign Says: Don’t Even Think About It!
I couldn’t decide between these two photos for the latest photo challenge. The first is a warning sign at the edge of Del Cerro Park in Rancho Palos Verdes. It’s a part up at the top of the hill, ending in if not exactly cliffs, a steep drop hundreds of feet down as the hills roll toward the ocean.
“Danger” signs are a dime a dozen. It’s the “Don’t even think about it!” that struck me as photo-worthy.
As for this second one, it’s not so much the sign that I found interesting as the fact that the bird looks like it’s staring at it, dismayed.
“Gee, I hope this doesn’t apply to seagulls, too!”
I collect pictures of funny/odd/interesting signs at K-Squared Ramblings, so if you’re interested in more, head over there for a look.
Seagull above the Bay

Seagull in Flight
Taken at the Ventura Pier during a stop on the drive to San Francisco last April. I watched this seagull for way too long!

Whoops! It seems I forgot to post anything here last week! Sorry about that!
To get things started again, here’s a view of a cliff and cove in Pismo Beach, California, taken last March.
