10 years ago a young #MountainLion crossed two freeways and began a life in Griffith Park, a semi-wild area in the hills of #LosAngeles. #P22 became a trail-cam celebrity, outlived life expectancy for wild pumas and inspired a #wildlife bridge across the 101.

Waning health prompted biologists to bring him in for a checkup, but he was hit by a car first. Injuries & chronic illness were too much for him to survive in a sanctuary, and he’s been euthanized.

P-22 in better days: a healthy mountain lion stalking along the ground at night, lit up by a camera flash, hills and the HOLLYWOOD sign in the background.

I should clarify in case the ALT text isn’t visible – the attached photo from the LA Times is of P-22 in better days, spotted on a wildlife camera.

Some wildlife I spotted on a hike today.

Some wildlife I spotted on a hike today. It was really nice in the shade, but it was also very hilly, and uncomfortably warm in the sun. I ended up staggering back to the car at the end.

The yellow and black bird is some sort of oriole. The black and white one is a black phoebe. I think the rabbit is a desert cottontail.

I spotted some of these feral parrots in the grocery store parking lot today.

Two of these parakeets flew across the grocery store parking lot into a palm tree, squawking as they went. I could only spot one of them once they’d settled, but I managed to get almost a dozen photos of it while it sat there.

“These birds, descendants of escaped pets, have managed to create thriving colonies in these cities despite the annual cold weather.”
