Unsafe bottled water in news, pet & human illness
I remember seeing this brand of bottled water a couple of years ago. The marketing-speak on the box really set off my BS detector.”Beyond alkalinity! We add negative ions!”
So I shouldn’t be surprised they ended up putting someone unqualified in charge of the process, *not training him*, and making the stuff actively poisonous. (Though the article doesn’t indicate what caused the cases of liver damage.)
Technician for water co. linked to liver failure says his dog got liver illness
Technician said he only had a couple of hours of training and did what he was told.

Huh, Verizon has sold Yahoo and AOL.
Verizon sells AOL and Yahoo for about half of what it paid
For half of what they paid for them. 🤦♂️
To a private equity firm. 😬
Flickr and Tumblr REALLY lucked out that Verizon put in the effort to look for a photo-sharing company and a blogging company to sell them to instead of just muddling along with no idea what to do with them until they just wanted to unload them.

Two crows chased a squirrel across the lawn at a park…
Two crows chased a squirrel across the lawn at a park, one of them swooping down and possibly making contact with its claws (I couldn't quite tell) until it ran up this tree. Then they perched on a nearby fence and waited. When it tried to run down the trunk, they flew at it again and it went back up. One crow perched on another branch of the tree and waited, while the other flew off.

When I write something new on my gemlog or import an older blog entry, sometimes I’ll also import related posts so I can link within the #gemini capsule instead of out to the web.
I was importing a post on how functional memorabilia is both irreplaceable and easily replaceable depending on how you look at it, and it mentioned my #Mozilla #Coffee mug – which I still have.

Blog: (Ir)replaceable?
But yeah, Mozilla Coffee was briefly a thing, back in 2003-2004. It wasn’t a run by Mozilla, it was someone who had a mail-order coffee business who branded some of it and donated half the profits to the Mozilla Foundation.

Takeout containers labeled FF for French Fries. Kid jokes: “Oh, there are lots of 255s!”
To be more precise, they’re actually labeled FFS, which of course is another thing entirely
Cooper’s Hawk (in tree, full)
Probably a Cooper’s Hawk, spotted on a walk this afternoon. It flew up to a telephone pole, alighted there for a few seconds, and as I was trying to line up a shot with the camera, it took off again, then flew a few houses down the street to perch in this tree.
I also posted a closer crop on my *ahem* @AddHawk account

Probably a Cooper’s Hawk, also spotted on the same walk this afternoon. It flew up to a telephone pole, alighted there for a few seconds, and as I was trying to line up a shot with the camera, it took off again, then flew a few houses down the street to perch in this tree.

It’s the first day of the City Nature Challenge!
This weekend, try to observe as many wild plants and animals in your neighborhood as you can, especially in urban areas.
Here are some #birds I spotted on a late afternoon walk today, including a sparrow, one of many many finches, two doves, and what I think might be two blackbirds (yes, including the gray one).

Host fixed their routing so my Nextcloud instance is reachable again and I don’t need to move it immediately. But this isn’t the first time this has happened, and I’m really starting to think hosting it at home is the way to go. Eventually.

And still no reply from tech support on the cloud server that lost its network connection to the outside world today (but that I can still SSH into from other servers in their datacenter)
Beginning to wonder if I should (a) move my Nextcloud laterally to another server and drop the old one,
(b) look for a different cloud provider (their managed VPS hosting is SOLID, but this has been flaky),
(c) plug storage into my Pi, host Nextcloud locally & open up outside access for when I’m out.
(a) would be simplest, but I’ll just have to deal with this again. (b) would involve researching other providers. (c) would mean figuring out what kind of storage I want to use & figuring out how best to mitigate the risk of allowing external access to a machine on the home network. I mean, yeah, I’m mostly at home these days anyway, but I’m kind of hoping that will change soon!
mental health/anxiety (-)
Something I’ve noticed lately is that I’m having the worst anxiety problems around indecision. Like, totally freezing up unable to take any sort of action on something because I’m not sure which approach I should take – and then once I just PICK SOMETHING I’m fine, even if I still have a nagging suspicion the other approach would have been better.

Two Hawks on a Tower
Two (probably red-tailed) hawks spotted on an electrical tower, one looking north, one looking east. I often see one perched up there, watching for prey, but rarely two!
I don’t usually see *two* hawks on this tower!
