Dark-eyed Juncos (roof vent and giant cable bundle)
They were making a chirp-chirp-chirp-chirp song that sounded like a toy ray gun.

Not sure what kind of bird’s nest this was, but I saw a hawk perched in the same tree.

Some days I spot a lot of birds at these gardens, some days (like on this one) I mostly just hear them. Though I was at least able to *see* some red-tailed hawks circling way up in the sky, even though I couldn’t get any photos of them.

Remote work vs network outage
Remote work vs network outage.
Spent 1.5 hours on the phone with tech support troubleshooting everything that could be done inside the apartment. Everything inside is fine. The soonest they can send a tech out is tomorrow morning.
So glad the kid’s back on campus today, even though he refused to get out of the car for something like 20 minutes.
And at least I have the phone hotspot, even if the cell signal is flaky on this side of the building.
But I’m getting a clear reminder of the difference between applications designed to run locally with an internet connection and applications designed to run over the internet. Gmail is a lot easier to use on my phone than on my desktop right now.

Internet access is fixed!

The wind has been as strong and gusty as the storm a few weeks ago when the power kept going out, but it’s been rock steady, so I guess those repairs worked.

Cherry blossoms are coming in at the local botanic gardens
Cherry blossoms are coming in at the local botanic gardens. They have a grove with multiple different cherry trees in various stages of waking up for spring (some with a few flowers, some with more flowers and leaves, some still bare), and a few scattered trees elsewhere in the garden – some of which are already covered. But the tree in the fourth shot isn’t even in full bloom yet!

New blog post, More Clocks than Time
New blog post, More Clocks than Time, inspired by having to change so many of them last night for the switch to DST.
Cross-posted to both web and gemini.
K2R: More Clocks than Time
Gemlog: More Clocks than Time
Walking around the house last night, setting all the clocks to Daylight Saving Time before bed, I found myself thinking: Why do we have so many clocks, anyway?
Why do I have so many clocks?

OK, I think the console has finished cycling through the accidental tab-hits on an empty command line and the long pause while autocomplete enumerates every executable file in the current path so it can give me an exact number when it asks if I really want to list them all
Ugh, no, it’s doing it on *all* tab-completion now (plus briefly flashing the screen white). I can’t remember what I had to do to fix it last time, and my search terms are failing me.
Oh, right, the flashing white screen is just the visual equivalent of the alert when sound is off.
Argh. you know what? It’s 5pm on Friday. Time to just reboot and deal with it on Monday

It’s still very experimental, but I’m messing around with #gemini at my new capsule, gemini://hyperborea.org
So far I’ve copied a few pages from my website and started a #gemlog. Mostly I’m trying to get a good sense of what works best in the ultra-minimalist environment. I’ll probably still be moving things around for a while.
Pages copied over so far include tech troubleshooting and some old MIDI files. The log’s mostly a subset of my blog so far (life, tech & entertainment catgegories), plus some recent posts on my early impressions of Gemini itself.
