Pelican Cove, just past the point with the lighthouse

Pelican Cove, just past the point with the lighthouse. Unlike other parts of the preserve, there’s a trail here that lets you hike down to the (rocky) beach. Of course then you have to hike back up again.

I don’t know what kind of rock this is or why it looks like layers of thin pastry (or maybe a sponge), but it certainly looked interesting!

Two birds spotted while hiking the trails on top of the coastal bluffs

Two birds spotted while hiking the trails on top of the coastal bluffs southwest of Los Angeles. First a lesser goldfinch, which took me forever to actually catch on camera (there were 3 or 4 of them flitting around and not stopping for very long anywhere!) and a black phoebe that was perched a few yards from the trail.

Picked out the best shots of the Point Vicente bluffs.

Picked out the best shots of the #PointVicente bluffs. I got there mid-afternoon & took some photos of the #cove with the historic #lighthouse (and could actually see Catalina Island in the distance!)

Then I walked along the blufftop path along the nature reserve for a while, before turning back to reach the lighthouse area by sunset.

A white-crowned sparrow, spotted in the brush at the top of the bluffs at Point Vicente.

These birds *really* blend in well with the dry brush and dirt – it was really hard to see them except when they stopped somewhere with contrast like this.

Two years ago today, I tried to beat the stress by driving around the coast of the Palos Verdes Peninsula and found myself at Point Vicente. I posted this video the following Tuesday morning, captioned, “Because we can all use 18 seconds of calm today.”

It seems like a good time to post it again.
