Dumblr of Age: Religious Protesters And A Father And Son At Comic-Con
The religious protesters outside of San Diego Comic-Con have been a constant fixture for the last few years. They stand between the Gaslamp area where all the restaurants and offsite locations are and the train tracks you have to cross to enter the con. They are supposedly…

DC, I don’t know whether to laugh at you or cry. But please get help for your ’90s addiction, because you’re only hurting yourself.
I don’t have a problem with a return to the 90s per se. I just wish they were interested in bringing back the GOOD parts of the 90s instead of the stuff I rolled my eyes at the first time around.

(Incidentally, this restaurant closed last year, and a new restaurant has taken over the location. Apparently the chain is still around, but until I saw this one, I was under the impression it was long gone.)

A more Tumblr-friendly version of my photos from going out to see Comet Pan-STARRS on Tuesday evening. I went to a hillside park to get above the fog layer, and ran into a bunch of other people with binoculars, telescopes and more. Read on if you’re interested, or just enjoy the photos!

The Bird and The Bat: Parsing the Veronica Mars Kickstarter Issues
thebirdandthebat:
Most Kickstarters are, for lack of a better term, exclusive events. If you don’t participate in the 30 days they’re up, you’re out of luck. There are some exceptions to this of course, many comic book Kickstarters now offer retailer incentives so people can actually purchase books in a shop if they’ve missed the end date. But the Veronica Mars film will not be exclusive to backers and that seemingly makes it less special to those who did back it. But that doesn’t seem to be an issue for fans, they just want to see the movie.
Um….what? People have it in their heads that crowd-funded business ventures are supposed to only produce things for their investors and nobody else?
I think they’re missing the point of a platform called Kickstarter.
Edit: I should add that none of the Kickstarter projects I’ve backed have given me the impression that the product was going to be given exclusively to the backers. So whether “most” is true or not in general, it hasn’t been in my (admittedly limited) experience.

Downtown San Diego’s nighttime skyline, seen from Harbor Island across the bay to the west. You can see the light trails from a couple of boats. The yellowish sky is the reflection of street lights on low-lying clouds. I have a wider shot that shows how much darker the sky is away from the city.
This was taken during last year’s Comic-Con. I figured I’d post it this week because the first round of hotel rooms go on sale this Wednesday. These are non-refundable, outside of downtown, and in some cases specific packages with minimum stays, but if you already have tickets and want to avoid the “Hoteloween” rush when the rest of the rooms go on sale, it might be worth taking a look.
Either way, you might be interested in my collection of Tips for Comic-Con.
“We’ll turn you from other craft stores.”
ashamanhannigan:
Little-known fact: in the First Age, Mazrim Taim sought power by running a craft store, rather than becoming head of the Asha’man.
Where did you think they got their supplies for making sword and dragon pins?
On a more serious note, I’m currently reading A Memory of Light, the long-awaited final volume of The Wheel of Time. I’m about 80 pages into “The Last Battle.” This chapter isn’t just longer than a Robert Jordan prologue, it’s longer than some novels I’ve read.
“We’ll turn you from other craft stores.”
I love it! I’d been trying to think of a punchline that had something to do with that, but just couldn’t come up with anything good.
Also, seeing “ ishamael likes this” on this post made my day.
OK, back to reading…

Remember the famous painting “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte” by Georges Seurat? … What do you mean, “No”? Really? How about this … Remember the pointillism painting from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off? Ah, now we’re on the same page.
Below you’ll find Rey Taira’s super-cool…
Aside from putting Sondheim in my head, the great thing about this is that the pointilist style works the same way as the four-color printing process: tiny little dots of color that, when you stand back, combine to form other colors. Perfect choice.

Backdated
I always feel weird when editing old blog posts at my main site publishes them here in Tumblr. I mean, I like that it works, and that they get properly backdated, but they still show up as new in the dashboard.
Even if they’re about events that happened six years ago.
