politics (general)

I mean, *everything* gets shoved into a binary. Coke vs. Pepsi, Windows vs. Mac, Twitter vs. Mastodon.

And then those binaries get lumped together, as if all Coke drinkers use Windows and all Pepsi drinkers use Macs. Even though they don't.

And then those groupings start to homogenize. The Coke drinkers who use Macs start thinking maybe they should use Windows, or maybe they should keep the Mac and start drinking Pepsi instead.

Politics should not be a team sport…

Politics should not be a team sport with only two sides, where your team is always right and their team is always wrong, and any criticism of someone who happens to be on your team is dismissed whether it’s in good faith or not.

We should have shifting coalitions based on each issue being discussed. Not semi-permanent factions where everyone has to pledge allegiance to one side or the other.

But everything gets shoved into a binary.

Maybe (most) humans are just wired for it

Nextcloud Apps

If you use a Nextcloud server, there’s a good collection of apps (some official, some third-party) that work with it. The ones I use:

Nextcloud – main app, does authentication, file access, optional auto-upload photos
Nextcloud Notes – kind of like Google Keep, but simpler. (IIRC Carnet is more like Keep, and also open) Nextcloud Talk – instant messaging, supposedly can do voice but I’ve never used it for that
Nextcloud News – RSS reader that syncs your feeds and read/unread through your Nextcloud server

Plus these apps that aren’t Nextcloud-specific, but work with it and other sync methods:

OpenTasks – ToDo list (needs Dav5x to sync)
DAVx5 – Syncs contacts, calendars and to-do items between any CalDav, CardDav or WebDav servers and your Android system, so you can access them with any local contacts or calendar app. (For instance: K-9 Mail can use contacts from my Google account and my Nextcloud account, and Simple Calendar can do the same with my calendars.)
Floccus – Bookmarks manager that can sync across multiple desktop browsers and the mobile app, using any of several sync options including Nextcloud

Interesting: I only know the term “bodega” in its borrowed-into-English small-convenience-store sense, and since this clearly wasn't one, I looked up the actual Spanish meaning…

…and discovered that bodega, apothecary and boutique all come from the ancient Greek word for storehouse, ἀποθήκη.

Crazy idea that I can’t believe I’m considering: Building a #gemini front end — well, not a front end so much as the “static” views of profiles and public posts – for @gotosocial

(I really need to finish some existing side projects before starting new ones.)

(Admittedly, a full gemini-based #GoToSocial front-end that enables posting and stuff would be cool too. Though it looks like Bubble may be a better fit for that sort of thing: gemini://geminispace.org/u/skyjake/1 )

Question for #indieweb folks: I remember a discussion about a syndication model that describes one of the ways I handle social media and my own site. It's sort of a selective/curated #pesos.

I don't import *all* my posts, just the ones I feel worth preserving, and those often as first drafts. I'll expand, rework, or otherwise finalize the posts on my website.

I could swear I saw someone come up with a term for this model, but I can't remember what it was!

In theory, bigger organizations have more resources to secure their data.

But smaller organizations also have smaller datasets to protect. When a giant conglomerate like this loses control of its data, it loses control of a LOT of data.

(Compare it to the impact if it was only your local optometrist's customer list that was leaked. More personal, but a lot fewer people.)

Flash TV finale

I haven’t watched it, but apparently the big villain in the 4-parter is…

Cobalt Blue.

CBR describes him as a “classic Flash villain” and “iconic.”
https://www.cbr.com/the-flash-cobalt-blue-set-photos/

I’ve been out of the fandom for a while, but back in the late 90s early 2000s there was a large contingent of Flash fans (specifically Barry Allen fans) who HATED the character. Mostly because in the comics he was Barry’s separated-at-birth twin.

I find this hilarious. Even if it’s just the fact that we’re still in the 1990s phase of the nostalgia cycle, the idea that Cobalt Blue is worth using for a TV series finale? Never would have occurred to people back in the day.

And TBH I kind of feel vindicated for the blog post I wrote back in 2008 arguing that if the character had been introduced back in the Silver Age, he *would* have been a classic.

Cobalt Blue, Classic Rogue?

I guess now he is!?

On Wandering.shop

Kind of wish I hadn’t deleted that CobaltBluePrime handle on Twitter back in November. It would’ve been perfect to bring it back and post “AT LAST MY TIME HAS COME” or something like that.

(I set it up for a 2011 April Fools’ joke where the blog was rebranded as Cobalt Blue Online for the day and we posted a bunch of Cobalt Blue-themed articles)

Though I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised. I mean, this is the show that successfully transformed Vibe into a beloved character!
