Those things that “everyone knows?” Not everyone knows them. Some people are finding out about them for the first time.

I had an enjoyable day at WonderCon today, though my shoulders felt like they were going to fall off since I was carrying around some rather large books. It was a good balance of autograph hunt, bargain hunt, sightseeing, costume spotting and events, with a lot going on but not too many people to move.
First batch of photos is up on Flickr.
Photo of last night’s closest approach between Jupiter and Venus.
Photo of last night’s closest approach between Jupiter and Venus. Jupiter is bright, but as you can see here, Venus is a lot brighter.
Edit: Apparently tonight is the closet approach. I could swear I’d read that it was Monday. Looks like I’ll be taking another photo tonight.
If you have a clear view of the western sky after sunset, go out and look sometime this weekend. Venus and Jupiter are getting really close (visually), and will reach their closest alignment on Monday.

Local coffee place had these Green Lantern vs. The Flash tip jars
Now that’s what I call a Flash drive!

Hellboy: Pancakes by Mike Mignola
Hellboy: Pancakes by Mike Mignola. Has to be one of the greatest 2 page comic stories ever made.
Pamcakes.
“He has eaten the pancake.” I will not lie, I intoned that when my eldest first ate pancakes. I knew he had veered from a dark path at that moment.
Aside from the monkey with the gun, this is the greatest Hellboy thing ever.
Bonus: it’s also super good for teaching three-act structure, ‘cause it’s a complete, traditionally structured story that fits on a single slide.
This story is pure joy, and it’s a teaching tool? I love Hellboy so much.
My son had his first pancake just this weekend. My wife and I looked at each other trying to decide which of us would quote the line. Seeing the comic referenced now = perfect timing.

Spent the day running around doing last-minute Christmas shopping, but I did manage to take a break around lunchtime to just relax.

Yeah, that would explain the CLANG CLANG CLANG sound. It’s supposed to be a computer, not a trolley.
Brion comments on FB: all aboard the broken power supply train!
Wayne comments on Google+: yeah, ouch, fare’s not worth it. 😉
Today, I watched a lunar eclipse, sunrise, and sunset. Probably a first.

Venus & Jupiter just popped into view. It would’ve been nice to add Mercury too, but it’s below the horizon.
Also: I really should’ve brought gloves.
If I’d thought about it, I could have gone back to the spot where I watched the sunrise this morning to catch the moonrise for full symmetry. Oh, well.
Lia BrownCool! I don’t think it was visible here…and it was so cold last night I wouldn’t have had much patience anyway…

Kelson VibberYeah, I think you might have been able to see the beginning of it in your area, but not much else.

Wendi HeckathornWhere did you watch it at?
Dec 11, 2011, 2:10 AM
Kelson VibberI watched most of the eclipse from home (well, across the street), then went down to an area of Redondo Beach where a street runs along a bluff above the beach (Esplanade & Avenue A). I tried to watch the moon set while eclipsed, but the sky was too light by then to really see it at that point, so I drove over to an east-facing hill to watch the sunrise. I came back to Esplanade at the end of the day to watch the sunset.

Wendi HeckathornThat’s awesome! I’m bummed I missed it, but I did enjoy seeing the beautiful full moon. Thanks for sharing the gorgeouspics you took. 🙂

Adobe is killing Flash for mobile devices. Looks like Steve Jobs won.
Edited to add: Of course, the real reason you won’t see Flash on a mobile phone is that he can run across the state and tap you on the shoulder before your phone starts ringing.
