Geese at the amphitheatre.
This city park has a pond which attracts ducks, coots, seagulls, and as near as I can tell a permanent flock of Canada Geese that wander around the banks of the pond and the open space at the south end, where these terraces are located.
Let’s just say I don’t think I’d want to sit on the ground in that part of the park.

Two #squirrels spotted on a hike last weekend: The good photos, and the two-seconds-later photos.
The first one took a while for me to spot inside the bush (though I could hear it), and then it started chowing down on the berries.
The second one looked like it was checking both ways before crossing the street, and then it took off in a blur. So maybe it was.
Also decided to go for a less traditional view of the #lighthouse at #PointVicente while I was there last weekend.
At #PointVicente, California: A wren(?) on the side of the cliffs, the iconic view of the cove and the historic #lighthouse, and a #sailboat alone on the sea.
iNat has suggested the bird is a rock wren.
The #Pixel4 phone’s camera looks amazing, but I can’t get past losing the fingerprint sensor. I could go back to passwords/patterns, but I really appreciate having a fast unlock option – and I just don’t trust face unlock.

Yeah, I haven’t gotten past the creepy factor. My tablet has face unlock and I still haven’t set it up after….3 months? Something like that.
I know the Pixel series is as much about pushing the tech envelope as anything else, but it’s still frustrating when they drop useful features to do it.
Oh well. With any luck, by the time this phone starts showing its age, there will be something on the market that’s a closer fit.
The Morrell House, originally built around 1906, now restored in association with the Redondo Beach Historical Museum.
One of these days I’m actually going to go there when it’s open, instead of stopping on the way somewhere else.
I did decide that the hidden light and the old house might have some #spooky potential, and ran it through some effects filters. Not sure if I succeeded.

Amazingly I did manage to get one sharp #photo of it before it flew off again. Which was fortunate, because I saw at least a dozen of these tiny #butterflies zipping around the bushes, but none of them slowed down long enough for me to catch them clearly.
#FotoFails I saw a gorgeous Marine Blue #butterfly that actually paused long enough for me to take a picture…with its wings open, even! But my camera kept insisting on focusing on the leaves behind it. 🙄
@SolanumGF Yeah. Sometimes it’s like…can I have manual focus back, PLEASE?
A Gulf Fritillary butterfly. A few weeks ago at the same gardens, I saw tons of monarchs. This time I saw a lot of these.

@sohkamyung I suppose if there aren’t any gulls that *aren’t* ocean-based, “seagull” is probably redundant, too.
In response to a question about the white dome behind the Queen Mary in this post:
I believe it was originally built to shelter the Spruce Goose (Howard Hughes’ experimental all-wooden giant seaplane) when it was on display at Long Beach. I know that’s what it was used for in the 1980s, anyway.
The plane is in a museum in Oregon now, and according to Wikipedia, the dome is now used as a terminal for Carnival Cruise lines.
Looking up at the walls of a hotel near LAX. The #patterened #facade in the first photo is repeated on several other walls around the hotel. Above it are many layers of #interleaved balconies for the hotel rooms.
Does anyone know the term for this #architecture style? It’s sort of post-Googie, pre-Brutalist?
Not as good a photo, but a wider view for context, before they repainted a couple of years ago. The wall and balconies are on the tower to the left of the frame.
I had to be somewhere near the coast this morning, so I figured I’d take 10 minutes to look for seagulls for #iNaturalist. I found a lot of them, but they were mostly hanging out on the beach, not flying around. Still, that’s plenty for observation purposes, and I did manage to catch this shot too!

Two of many monarch butterflies I saw today on a walk at nearby botanical gardens. Most of them were too busy flying around to stop anywhere I could catch them on camera, but there were a few that paused long enough.

@aciccarello Fortunately seagulls also tend to be fearless compared to other birds. Sparrows will fly away before I get close. I’ve seen a seagull wait until the last minute to move out of the way of an SUV, then fly right back down behind it.
